One Hundred Years Tomorrow: The Triangle Fire Remembered An Essay by Robert Guzman UPR Aguadilla March 24, 2011 On March 25th it will be exactly one hundred years since a garment factory fire in Brooklyn New York took the lives of 146 mostly women workers. In 1911 there were no laws to protect laborers from the exploitation and abuse of the wealthy factory owners. In New York, even then one of the most important cities in the world, working people labored in slave like conditions. Their work day was between 12 and 13 hours long. There were no laws to secure a safe working place or even enough exits for the event of an emergency such as a fire. There was no minimum wage or medical insurance of any kind. Women were particularly vulnerable to abuses since they could be paid lower salaries than men and they didn’t even have the right to vote or organize. Ethnic minorities were also easy targets of labor abuses. Most of the women who died in this terrible fire were recently arrived

Taliban says its attack on Pakistani schoolgirl justified Yahoo News October 16, 2012 Reuters – 9 hrs ag ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Taliban insurgents said on Tuesday that the Pakistani schoolgirl its gunmen shot in the head deserved to die because she had spoken out against the group and praised U. S. President Barack Obama. Malala Yousufzai, 14, was flown to Britain on Monday, where doctors said she has every chance of making a "good recovery". The attack on Yousufzai, who had been advocating education for girls, drew widespread condemnation. Pakistani surgeons removed a bullet from near her spinal cord during a three-hour operation the day after the attack last week, but she now needs intensive specialist follow-up care. Authorities have said they have made several arrests in connection with the case but have given no details. Pakistan s Taliban described Yousufzai as a "spy of the West". "For this espionage, infidels gave her awards and rewards. And Islam orders killing of those

Within the defenders of the ‘Estado Libre Asociado’, the ELA, there is a group that claims that it is possible for Puerto Rico to have its own sovereignty thus enjoying most of the privileges of an independent country while at the same time keeping American citizenship for island residents. The soberanistas believe that the island can pick and choose which federal laws and which federal agencies we like and keep those while rejecting the ones we do not want or need. So let’s leave the PELL Grants, Section 8, WIC and HUD housing programs and lets kick out the Federal Courts and the FBI. Is this really possible? Is a sovereign ELA attainable? There are many reasons to believe that this not an attainable goal. First of all, there is the ethical reason. As citizens of the United States the people of Puerto Rico can demand before Congress equal treatment. However it cannot demand special treatment. The people of Puerto Rico cannot demand for its ci

Puerto Rico’s Future: A Common Sense Approach When it comes to Puerto Rico’s status Boricuas tend to needlessly complicate things. There are never ending debates as to how to solve this centuries old mess. But it need not be so complex. There are in reality only three core issues here and they can be addressed with three fundamental questions: Is the current status, the ELA, acceptable? If needed, is there any way to modify it to the point where it’s no longer colonial? If not, then which are the non-colonial options available to us? Let’s take them one at a time. Is the current status, the Estado Libre Asociado, or ELA acceptable? No it is not. It should not be acceptable to any self respecting Puerto Rican because it is by its very nature colonial and undignified. In fact Puerto Rico has the sad distinction of being the oldest colony in the world, with 400 hundred years under Spanish colonial rule and more than a century under American rule. A colony is a state or geo-po
