Landcare awards recognise individuals and groups, National Landcare facilitator Brett de Hayr acknowledges, but in the wider picture it is really about celebrating the volunteer ethos that drives Landcare. “People in the rural sector, and especially in Landcare, can be reticent about stepping forward for an award because personal recognition isn’t part of the culture,” Mr de Hayr said. “But the awards recognise that there is real-life effort, made by real people, doing things that are seldom recognised in places that are seldom recognised. “We’re celebrating what the individuals represent, as much as their own efforts. “That’s why we ask people to nominate – because it’s about inspiring others, and putting a face to real-life examples of Landcare. ” This year’s state and te

But a group of men with a passionate interest in regeneration have their sites set on a 303-hectare property called Millers Farm near Weetulta for very different reasons. Part of it is still leased for cropping, but the Gynburra Narungga Men’s Group (GNMG) wants to phase out farming altogether and turn the property into a cultural ‘eco-healing” sanctuary. Chairperson David Wilson says he and secretary Owen Karpany came up with the idea to establish a drugand alcohol-free native bush property in 2001-02. “If the land was a farm, and indeed this has been the case with the Millers property, then we envisioned re-vegetating it back to native status,” he said. “The reason we had this approach was to have a place where Narungga people could have access to land that resembles the country in which their ancestors lived on and a place that could facilitate healing “Hence our motto: ‘Heal th

So has the lantana. Several years ago the Bundanon Trust recognised that it had a daunting problem on its hands. While the Trust had been managing the human aspects of Bundanon and adjacent Riversdale, lantana and other environmental issues had been quietly degrading sizeable areas of the property’s environmental heritage. Much of Bundanon’s 15 kilometres of Shoalhaven river frontage is severely infested with lantana. When the issue was reviewed, Bundanon Trust chief executive Deborah Ely said it quickly became clear that the challenge was bigger than the Trust’s resources, and of the local catchment management authority. But earlier this year, Landcare Australia announced that another act of philanthropy, the Borland Bequest, will be put to the aid of arti

The Spicers ‘Recreate’ Program, in partnership with Landcare Australia supports community groups across Australia in their efforts to restore and maintain degraded landscapes. Since 2004, Spicers has contributed over half a million dollars to Landcare Australia, and Spicers employees and customers have dirtied their hands by participating in planting events all across Australia. Held annually in each state, Spicers staff return to the same sites year after year. To celebrate the great work achieved by this partnership Landcare Australia have developed a beautiful coffee table book that captures and showcases Spicers supported projects across the country.

It’s really encouraging to see what’s happening”. Ms Campbell suggests that anyone looking for some good news stories only need review some of the finalist case studies on the Landcare Australia website – and then cast their vote for their favourites in the Peoples Choice award category. “Just looking at the case studies helps you understand how many ways there are to get involved in Landcare,” she said. “It’s not all just about planting trees. ” And in a time when “doom and gloom” seems to be the prevailing mood, Landcare is a reminder that rather than dwelling on problems, “people are just getting out there and doing something”. “There may be a whole lot out there in

1● ● ● ● THE Budget handed down in May positioned Australia for the future, with announcements like the funding commitment for Caring for our Country. The flagship program supports government priorities of protecting and conserving our biodiversity and promoting the adoption of sustainable farm practices. The government announced the program would receive $2. 2 billion over five years from 1 July 2013 to ensure natural resource management projects will continue after the current five-year program ends. It will ensure the thousands of volunteers, farmers and community groups – like you – who work to make a difference to their local environment through Caring for our Country can continue to have the support they require. For the first time, the government will recognise the complementary yet separate roles farmers and environmentalists play by delivering Caring for our Country through two specific streams: one dedicated to sustainable agriculture and the other to the environment. 1● ● ● ● W HEN Landcare was launched in a small Victorian country town in 1985, it was little more than an idea. But it sowed the seed for something big – a movement that would not just go nationwide but spread beyond Australian borders. It’s a story Forbes farmer Philip Bruem likes, not just because of what Landcare stands for but because he’s hoping to one day be able to relate a similar success story about the Australian Year of the Farmer (AYOF). It’s almost six years since Mr Bruem found himself lamenting the growing divide between city consumers and agriculture with friend Geoff Bell, now AYOF’s managing director. Frustrated by the lack of appreciation of farmers’ contribution and determined to do something about it, they began exploring the potential for an event that would highlight the importance of agriculture. That idea for an “event” turned into a full year of events and a plan to have 2012 gazetted as “Australian year of the farmer”. “No formal application was requir
