Powell Raising beds in therapeutic gardening for people with range of motion problems brings the garden to the gardener rather than the gardener to the garden. The garden can be modified to meet the needs of each individual gardener. • The garden’s location and accessibility are of major importance. Can the gardener get to the area at any season and time with little effort? Does the surface support year-round foot or wheel traffic? Are the sunlight requirements of garden plants (at least 6 hours each day) and their need for protection from strong winds being considered? • The area around the raised beds must offer easy and safe access. The surface must be level, firm, free of obstacles, and wide enough to turn a wheelchair. • Raised bed construction is based on each gardener’s individual needs. The width should not exceed 1⁄2 the reach of the gardener. The height

Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 Arthur & Friends has been hard at work setting up the greenhouse at Maple Farm in Wantage, NJ! It took months of work to get the greenhouse set up for our hydroponic growing system with the majority of the work focused on getting the floor level. The pictures at the left illustrate the many stages of the transformation. We began with the greenhouse still full from the previous years planting of tomatoes, squash and pepper plants in raised beds that had an underground irrigation system, which had to be dismantled and removed. Next the floor had to be leveled and pea gravel… 28 tons … had to be spread overtop of the surface. It was an exciting day when the big green tractor trailer arrived from California with our system. We had to unload the entire trailer by hand and then move everything to the greenhouse for assembly. The next step was to put the 124’ of growing tables together, which six very hardworking volunteers each gave many dozens of hour

Plants and Green Spaces – their unique contribution to Local Communities Community Cohesion/Big Society • Parks, gardens, allotments and other green activities provide social capital and foster community engagement1 . Volunteer groups and other local residents could be more involved in maintenance with support from Councils’ parks departments. This is low cost and sustainable; • Involving local residents in decisions on where trees should be planted also encourages community engagement and liaison and less likelihood of vandalism to newly planted trees so reducing costs; • If parks and gardens are not maintained regularly they could incur long-term costs to rebuild them; • Buildings with high levels of greenery have experienced 32% fewer crimes2 ; lower crime means less expenditure on policing and community liaison in the longer term. Climate Change & Energy Consumption • A 10% increase in urban tree coverage will counteract climate change by reducing urban “heat island” temperature

According to the National Eye Institute, only 10% of the 14 million visuallyimpaired people in the United States are completely blind. Because a portion of the gardening public in Oregon has some visual impairment, this publication provides several adaptive methods and suggestions to make gardening simpler for these gardeners. Design Avoid curved pathways because they make orientation difficult. Path segments should be straight, with changes in direction marked by a shrub or with a change in the texture of the path material. Steps should be accompanied by a rail that begins several feet ahead of the steps. • Make flower borders and planted beds no more than three feet across so the gardener can reach the plants while kneeling and working with short-handled tools. Island beds, with access from two

This paper uses a strictly medical point of view to assess whether or not HT is effective for improvement of functional activities in the brains of brain-damaged patients.

The information shared clearly opened new channels of thought and I believe, have set us upon a path for seeing greenspaces in places previously unconsidered and in the healing light of positive therapeutic outcomes for our veterans. ” – Alee Karpf, HTR, MS, CTRS Out of this event rose interest and alignment of professionals to advocate for therapeutic gardens veterans and their families. “The conference brought home the need to make healthcare more about quality of living not just preservation of life; and mental a

HORTICULTURE THERAPY- GLOUCESTER, VIRGINIA STYLE Since the 1930’s, Gloucester, Virginia has owned the title: “Daffodil Capital Of America” thanks to the countless fields of daffodils that grew wild in the fields of the county. In more recent years’ bulb production turned daffodils into a cottage industry. The first Daffodil Festival was held in 1939 and continues today with a 3 day celebration featuring tours of extensive daffodil fields, a parade, a daffodil contest, music, and artisan booths. With this history, it is no surprise that the Gloucester Master Gardener (GMG) Horticulture Therapy program includes lots of projects including painting, arranging, coloring, stenciling and of course, planting daffodils. The Gloucester Master Gardener’s mission states in part, “to provide horticultural educational opportunities to the public… to enhance the environment and lives of residents in our community “ a Horticulture Therapy program is a key component through which some of the often
