Designing Interfaces: Patterns for Effective Interaction Design by Jenifer Tidwell Required For Anyone Involved In Ui Design Designing a good interface isnt easy. Users demand software that is wellbehaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology -- web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices -- may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well. UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence. Designing Interfaces captures those best practices as design patterns -- solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety o

Descartes Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict Between Faith and Reason (Vintage) by Russell Shorto More Than Just The Bones A New York Times Notable Book Sixteen years after René Descartes death in Stockholm in 1650, a pious French ambassador exhumed the remains of the controversial philosopher to transport them back to Paris. Thus began a 350-year saga that saw Descartes bones traverse a continent, passing between kings, philosophers, poets, and painters.

Moab Is My Washpot by Stephen Fry Brilliant Stephen Fry is not making this up! Fry started out as a dishonorable schoolboy inclined to lies, pranks, bringing decaying moles to school as a science exhibit, theft, suicide attempts, the illicit pursuit of candy and lads, a genius for mischief, and a neurotic life of crime that sent him straight to Pucklechurch Prison and Cambridge University, where he vaulted to fame along with actress Emma Thompson. He wound up starring as Oscar Wilde in the film Wilde, costarring in A Civil Action, and writing funny, distinguished novels. This irresistible book, the best-written celebrity memoir of 1999, concentrates on Frys first two tumultuous decades, but beware! A Fry sentence can lead anywhere, from a ringing defense of beating schoolchildren to a thoughtful comparison of male and female naughty parts. Frys deepest regrets seem to be the elusiveness of a particular boys love and the fact that, despite his keen ear for music, Frys singing voice c

Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody Great Book. American History Born to a poor couple who were tenant farmers on a plantation in Mississippi, Anne Moody lived through some of the most dangerous days of the pre-civil rights era in the South. The week before she began high school came the news of Emmet Till’s lynching. Before then, she had known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. But now there was…the fear of being killed just because I was black. In that moment was born the passion for freedom and justice that would change her life. An all-A student whose dream of going to college is realized when she wins a basketball scholarship, she finally dares to join the NAACP in her junior year. Through the NAACP and later through CORE and SNCC she has first-hand experience of the demonstrations and sit-ins that were the mainstay of the civil rights movement, and the arrests and jailings, the

Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition by Irving Chernev Essential Reading For Beginners Chernov explains 33 games in detail. The explanations make the moves of the master easy to follow and show the reader where to place his pieces to make powerful, telling combinations. My 9 y. o. niece recently developed an interest in chess, and she was quick to learn the figurine notation--from Chess Informant, no less. But she had the unfortunate problem of being in an after school program for chess that was neither kid-friendly or (by the description) not doing a very good job either. Since I live a bit far I needed something educational, and after reading some reviews & visiting some bookstores to flip through, I eventually chose what I used from back in 1970s (I was a Fischer Boom kid then), and so I went back to what taught me the basics of play. I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies): True Tales of a Loudmouth Girl by Laurie Notaro I Love This Woman. Here are more scathingly funny tales from the wild side! Laurie Notaro survived the debauched ride of her twenties and the bumpy road to matrimony. Now she’s ready to take on the thirtysomething years . . . and almost middle age has never been more hilarious. Laurie is married, mortgaged, and now—miraculously—employed in the corporate world, discovering that bosses come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees of mental stability. After maxing out her last good credit card at Banana Republic, she’s dressed for success and ready to face the jungle: surviving feral, six-foot-plus Gretchen (“Three Thousand Faces of Eve”) before battling the overbearing, overstuffed (in way-too-small pants) new mom Suzzi, who ruthlessly cancels Laurie’s newspaper column and learns

A Peoples History of the United States: 1492-Present (Perennial Classics) by Howard Zinn Great Read Consistently lauded for its lively, readable prose, this revised and updated edition of A Peoples History of the United States turns traditional textbook history on its head. Howard Zinn infuses the often-submerged voices of blacks, women, American Indians, war resisters, and poor laborers of all nationalities into this thorough narrative that spans American history from Christopher Columbuss arrival to an afterword on the Clinton presidency. Addressing his trademark reversals of perspective, Zinn--a teacher, historian, and social activist for more than 20 years--explains, My point is not that we must, in telling history, accuse, judge, condemn Columbus in absentia. It is too late for that; it would be a useless scholarly exercise in morality. But the easy acceptance of atrocities as a deplorable but necessary price to pay for progress (Hiroshima and Vietnam, to save Western civiliza
