PERU Investing in FINANCIAL TIMES SPECIAL REPORT | Wednesday September 21 2011 Beware Brazilians bearing gifts Peruvians have mixed feelings about their neighbour’s influence Page 2 Markets have applauded Ollanta Humala’s decision to swap his signature red T-shirt and revolutionary rhetoric for a sombre suit and pledges to protect the rights of investors. However, the Peruvian president’s abrupt shift in message has left observers, and some of his own supporters, waiting to see what he does next. “Humala is a work in progress,” says Michael Shifter, president of InterAmerican Dialogue, the Washington policy forum. “The initial signs are basically positive on economic and social policy. The concerns are more in terms of his statements on human rights and some of the advisers he has on security and democracy issues. ” The new president has promised “more action and fewer words” than Alan García, his predecessor. BANKING & FINANCE Central & Eastern Europe FINANCIAL TIMES SPECIAL REPORT | Friday May 20 2011 Region faces long haul from recession E motions across central and eastern Europe have run the gamut since 2008, from fear of a regional meltdown to relief that catastrophe had been averted. Now the mood has settled into one of sober realism. Many countries are realising that the climb back from recession is going to be long and hard. Growth will not quickly, if ever, return to the levels of the years before the collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered the global financial crisis. Thanks to co-ordinated international action, there was not a single sovereign default across the former Communist bloc. Many governments and authorities – not to mention populations – in the region also acted with a toughness and determination to correct fiscal and external imbalances that put those farther west and south in Europe to shame.
