Father Joseph Appleyard, SJ celebrated the Mass in which six students were baptized. Fathers Donald MacMillan, SJ and Anthony Penna, director of Campus Ministry, concelebrated the liturgy. Receiving all three Sacraments of Initiation were Katlyn Beaver, Samuel Hay, Neil Hood, Yvette Ramirez, Alexander Riyadi, and Kimberly Sykes. Lauren Haumesser, Caitlin Mead, and Kristin Moran celebrated Confirmation. The nine students, including a BC Law student, participated in a two-semester program of preparation, called the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This included weekly meetings, individual spiritual journeys, and retreats. Sister Mary Sweeney, SC coordinates the BC R

The sixth annual Baldwin Awards, an event which recognizes “excellence in film and video” among Boston College undergraduates, featured thirty-seven films nominated for fifteen categories of awards. The winner of Best Picture of the Year was Man of the Year, a photomontage film directed and edited by Kevin Nihill 11. Madeline McSherry, 11, was director of photography and Tom Tarangiol 11, was the sound editor. Matthew Shalvoy ‘11, Neil Patch ‘12, Rich Hoyt ‘12, and Megan Pietruszka ’12 acted in the film. Man of the Year is a comedy about the adventures of an inflatable doll, named “Man of the Year,” who is given to a character as a birthday gift but becomes a p

The report is ISI’s fourth consecutive report on civic literacy, and the organization calls this report “groundbreaking. ” The Institute attempted to answer the question, “If earning a bachelor’s degree does not significantly impact civic knowledge, what impact does college have on civic life?” ISI polled 2,508 respondents, asking whether they strongly agreed, somewhat agreed, were neutral, somewhat disagreed, or strongly disagreed with t

Boston College’s optional health insurance plan, Blue Care Elect Preferred (PPO), contains “Family Planning” under the list of services covered by the policy. A call by The Observer to Blue Cross Blue Shield confirmed that under these services include doctor’s visits related to family planning, contraception, and “in some instances birth control pills. ” According to Koster Insurance Agency, INC, Boston College’s insurance agent, these services represent a “bundle,” or a group of benefits that the provider optionally selects to be part of a larger package. In order to obtain birth control or contraceptives, a student would have to pay a $20 visit fee, and 20% of the cost of any prescribed contraception or birth control pills. The remaining 80% is picked up by the insurance company. Surgical abortions do not appear to be covered by the BC policy, but neither Blue Cross Blue Shield nor Koster Insurance Agency could rule out the possibility of surgical abortions being covered under the

Boston College spent $200,000 on federal lobbying efforts in Washington D. C. in 2008, according to lobbyist watchdog group OpenSecrets. org. Although BC has only spent over six figures on federal lobbying once since 1998, BC spent $80,000 per year in between 1998-2007, and has so far spent $50,000 in 2009. BC has spent a total of $1,050,000 in the past twelve years. The University employs Washington D. C. -based lobbying firm Cassidy & Associates. Cassidy &Associates, which has been in business since 1975, boasts the capability to lobby in over eighteen fields, including education appropriations, which it indentifies as a “core area of expertise” since founder Gerald S. J. Cassidy began his lobbying career representing colleges and universities. Cassidy & Associates, a firm that has represented institutions of higher education for over twenty five years, claims to help clients gain federal funding for “major construction and infrastructure Despite the fact that Boston College r

A nna Djintcharadzé, a doctoral student and teacher in the philosophy department at Boston College, may have her published work permanently revised without her permission in order to make it more politically correct. Djintcharadze recently wrote two articles, entitled “African Church Fathers” and “Latin,” for a new, four-volume Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization. The encyclopedia was published in October of 2008, with many contributors receiving complimentary copies of the book before Blackwell Publishing inexplicitly stopped printing copies of the book and destroyed all remaining copies in its possession. According to George Thomas Kurian, editor-in-chief of the project, the editorial board complained that entries in the encyclopedia are “too Christian, too orthodox, too anti-secular and too anti-Muslim and not politically correct enough for being used in universities. ” Although the encyclopedia is admittedly for university use, Djintcharadzé disagrees with the notion that jus

A nn Russo, a theology masters student at Loyola Marymount University, will come to give a lecture at Boston College on March 28 entitled “Jesus Christ as Grand Marshall of Queer America. ” The talk, designed for masters and doctoral students, will address the relationship between the queer community and Christianity. In particular, Russo hopes to “look at the symbol of Christ…as someone who worked with a marginalized community. ” Russo, a self-described Christian pluralist, understands “queer America” as being composed of “anyone who is not in a normative heterosexual relationship. ” She does not believe that the queer community encompasses a specific lifestyle or cultural, but rather is constrained strictly to sexual orientation. Russo’s work caught the attention of the organizers of the event, entitled “Engaging Particularities VII-New Directions in Comparative Theology, Interreligious Dialogue, Theology of Religions, and Missiology,” because it is controversial in nature. While Boston College has paid Boston-based lobbying firm The Brennan Group $179,000 since 2007, The Brennan Group has spent $75,275 on political contributions in the same time frame. Of the $75,275 spent on campaign contributions, The Brennan Group has donated almost exclusively to Democratic politicians in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Brennan Group, which consists of three lobbyists named John A. Brennan Jr. , Daniel P. O’Brien and Lynda Bernard, has only donated $1,800 to Republican candidates since 2007, meaning that Republican politicians only account for 2. 4% of The Brennan Group’s campaign contributions. In fact, only four GOP state legislators – State Representatives Bradley Jones and George Peterson, and State Senators Bruce Tarr and Richard Tisei – have received any contribution from The Brennan Group during this time period.
